Ranking the Most Important on Defense: No. 22

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated presents the fourth day of the defensive countdown below.

No. 22:

Player: Joe Powell

Position: Backup field corner

The rundown: The 6-foot, 171-pound Skyline High School product arrived at OU as a four-star receiver after hauling in 40 receptions for 678 yards and nine scores as a senior in 2009. But after playing four games last year as a reserve slot receiver behind star Ryan Broyles, the coaching staff elected to move him to the defensive side of the ball during spring ball. They shifted him to corner a couple weeks before the Spring Game, and Powell recorded four tackles in that game.

Expectations for 2011: If he's to get much playing time, he'll have to really shine with a guy like Demontre Hurst currently in front of him. Gabe Lynn and Jamell Fleming are on the other side at the boundary position. So, there's heavy competition at the corner spot and in the entire secondary, for that matter. Powell, though, brings some much needed depth to this position. Before Fleming's return, it was perhaps one of the few weaknesses on this team, but it's not anymore.

No. 25: Julian Wilson

No. 24: James Haynes

No. 23: Geneo Grissom
