Ranking the Most Important on Defense: No. 21

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated continues on with the fifth day of the defensive countdown.

No. 21:

Player: Quentin Hayes

Position: Backup strong safety

The rundown: Hayes is one of two Lancaster defensive backs in this secondary. Along with cornerback Demontre Hurst, this 6-foot, 181-pound DB also comes from Lancaster High. He came out of there as a three-star prospect and the 38th ranked safety in the country. Hayes then redshirted during the 2010 season with a talented group of safeties led by Jonathan Nelson and Quinton Carter in front of him.

Expectations for 2011: Hayes is listed behind one of the best youngsters on the team on the depth chart, Aaron Colvin. That said, he'll have to fight to get much playing time, especially if the coaches consider shifting Tony Jefferson to strong and move Corey Nelson in at the nickel. But he's still a valuable piece from the stand point that, like others previously mentioned, he ups the depth.

No. 25: Julian Wilson

No. 24: James Haynes

No. 23: Geneo Grissom

No. 22: Joe Powell
