Ranking the Most Important on Defense: No. 20

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated presents the sixth day of the defensive countdown.

No. 20:

Player: Torrea Peterson

Position: Backup defensive tackle

The rundown: Peterson is the lightest defensive tackle on the current depth chart at 292 pounds, but don't be deceived. This 6-foot-3 DT is still a beast. He redshirted and gained a valuable year of growth last year. Prior to that, he emerged out of East Central High School in San Antonio as a four-star prospect. That year, he had 46 total tackles, including 15 for loss, as well as a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and a PBU.

Expectations for 2011: He is very much in this thing for playing time, if not a starting spot. Head coach Bob Stoops singled him out as one of the top performers so far through the first three days of camp. So, that's a very encouraging sign for his progress. As of right now, Peterson is listed behind Casey Walker, with Jamarkus McFarland at the other tackle spot. But he is right alongside Stacy McGee for the third spot in the rotation. Peterson will play this year and possibly some key snaps.
