Ranking the Most Important on Defense: No. 14

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated is another day closer to No. 1 on the defensive countdown inside.

No. 14:

Player: Stacy McGee

Position: Backup defensive tackle

The rundown: McGee was a starter in the majority of OU's games last year, starting 11 of 14 contests. He even led all defensive tackles with eight tackles against Air Force and racked up a pair of tackles for loss against Cincy. That was part of a 26-tackle season (15 unassisted), which also featured 3.5 tackles for loss. In 2009, McGee played just two games and managed only one tackle as a reserve against Idaho State. The 6-foot-4, 299-pounder redshirted his first season in the Crimson and Cream back in 2008.

Expectations for 2011: One of the biggest question marks on this team is at defensive tackle, and with his experience from a year ago, McGee does have the chance to beat out the two guys ahead of him and start. He can really make an impact there with consistent play. As a junior, he provides leadership to this group, which has three juniors (Casey Walker and Jamarkus McFarland are the other two) and one redshirt freshman (Torrea Peterson). But he'll have to really stand out because Peterson has elevated his game so far this camp. No doubt, though, if he performs at a winning level, he should at least be in the rotation.
