Ranking the Most Important on Defense: No. 1

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated has finally made it to the top spot on the defensive countdown inside.

No. 1:

Player: Travis Lewis

Position: Starting weak side linebacker

The rundown: Needless to say, the Sooners suffered a major setback when Lewis broke the big toe in his left foot in the Oklahoma Drill this fall camp. He returned for his senior season after leading the team in tackles three years in a row. Lewis recorded 109 the previous two seasons after setting an OU-freshman record 144 his first year. Along with his 109 tackles last year, Lewis also had 5.5 tackles for loss, including 1.5 sacks, and he finished third on the team with three interceptions, including a huge game-changer in the Big 12 Championship against Nebraska. He had five PBU's, three quarterback hurries and a pair of fumble recoveries. So, Lewis was all over the field.

Expectations for 2011: Right now, it's still unsure when Lewis will return, but if he does, indeed, come back for the Florida State game, there's no reason to believe he won't lead the team in tackles once again. In fact, if he comes back after the FSU game and only misses a couple of contests, he should still lead the team in tackles again for the fourth and final time in his OU career. As for a total, he'll finish with at least 100. On or off the field, Lewis is the leader of this defense. It goes as he goes. So any extended period of time Lewis misses will no doubt be devastating for defensive coordinator Brent Venables' troops.
