RECRUITING: Louisiana safety loves to hit

Craig Steltz already has a favorite, but would an offer from the Sooners be enough to change his mind?

CRAIG STELTZ, S, 6'2, 200, 4.55, METAIRIE, (ARCHBISHOP RUMMEL) LOUISIANA:

Steltz is one of those head hunters who comes out of the Bengal State feared by opponents and loved by prep and college coaches. A three-year starter, and four-year letterman, Steltz finished last season with 130 tackles and nine interceptions in 14 games.

"I think the best thing that I do is to get around the ball and make plays," said Steltz. "The more times I can get around the ball the more times I can make plays. Once I get to the ball, then I go about my business and make plays and I try to make them as aggressively as I can. There are a few times that I cover a receiver in man-coverage, but other times I work in a zone and we have a very good zone defense."

Steltz can bench 330 pounds, squats 410, runs the 400M (52) and is on the 4X400 relay (second leg). At this point, Steltz has seven offers and he is already drawing some opinions on his recruiting.

"Since I live in Louisiana LSU is at the top of the list, and I am probably leaning their direction," said Steltz. "I am keeping an open mind, or as open mind as I can. However, I want to see what my options are. I like UCLA, Colorado and Florida State, and they are the other schools that have offered me at this time that I have an interest in.

"I also like Oklahoma and really followed them a couple of years ago when they had that all-world safety Roy Williams," Steltz continued. "He was a great player and their defense seems to use their safety's in a positive way."

"Oklahoma State has offered me, but not Oklahoma. If Oklahoma did offer I would be very interested in them. Right now I am still keeping all my options open."

Steltz doesn't plan to go to any summer camps, because he has made a commitment to work a youth camp at his school and he needs the camp to buy a car for his senior year.
