Sooner Weekly Sports Wrap

NORMAN, Okla. — In one of the newest features of the site, Sooners Illustrated updates you on how all the athletic programs fared over this past week and the latest news in the first weekly sports wrap.

Baseball

This Week: Tickets for the 2012 season are finally purchasable online at SoonerSports.com or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (800) 456-GoOU.

Notes: There is a good non-conference slate this year, including home contests against Air Force, Oral Roberts, Arkansas, Dallas Baptist and future conference opponent TCU. It also includes the season-opening series against Hartford Feb. 24 at 3 p.m., and the Sooners play host to UT Arlington in the middle of the following week. OU begins the season Feb. 17 at Pepperdine. In addition, the 24-game home schedule includes battles at L. Dale Mitchell between Texas (March 16-18), Kansas State (March 30-April 1), Missouri (April 13-15) and Baylor (May 11-13).

Men's Basketball

Last Week: OU took care of business against both Oral Roberts (73-59) and Arkansas (78-63) to complete the second-best eight-game start in the last eight years at 7-1. Guard Steven Pledger netted 19.5 points per game on 65.2 percent field goal shooting, while forward Andrew Fitzgerald also excelled at 16.5 points per game, shooting 53.6 percent. Forward Tyler Neal provided a nice spark off the bench of 11.5 points and 60 percent shooting per contest. As a team, OU shot 51 percent and limited their opponents, the Golden Eagles and Razorbacks, to 35.6 percent and 19 percent, respectively.

This Week: The Sooners do battle against Houston at 7 p.m. Saturday at Chesapeake Energy Arena in the All-College Classic.

Notes: Just one OU team in the last 16 years has averaged more points per game in a season than this squad has so far this year. That was the 2008-09 Blake Griffin-led team that managed 78.7 points per contest, while this team is scoring 78.1 points per game. The Sooners have out-rebounded seven of their eight opponents and rank eighth in the country with a +9.8 rebounding margin. Pledger has scored at least 20 on three different occasions, ranks third in the Big 12 Conference with 17.9 points per game and is shooting 57.7 percent, which ranks first in the conference among perimeter players. Forward Romero Osby's 3.4 offensive boards per game also leads the conference.

Women's Basketball

Last Week: The Lady Sooners finally ended their three-game losing streak, their first since March 2008, when they defeated Milwaukee 72-50. Previously, OU had fallen to Vanderbilt, Ohio State and Fresno State in consecutive contests.

This Week: OU hits the road for three difficult games in the Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas. It will face Ohio, Syracuse and Xavier starting Dec. 18.

Notes: In OU's victory the other night, guard Aaryn Ellenberg extended her streak of a 3-pointer made to 27 consecutive games as she hit a pair. Entering Dec. 12, OU had a 118-week run in the Associated Press Top 25, a streak that began during the freshman season of former forwards Ashley and Courtney Paris back in 2005-06. The streak is the longest in the Big 12 behind Baylor's ongoing one.

Wrestling

Last Week: OU fell in its first duel of the season to No. 2 Oklahoma State 25-13 at Gallagher Iba Arena. OU led 6-3 before OSU took the next four bouts and six of 10 overall.

This Week: The Sooners are off this week and next before heading to Chicago to compete in the Midlands Championships Dec. 29-30.

Notes: OU's Kendric Maple (141 pounds) and Jarrod Patterson (125) are still unbeaten on the year after their Bedlam victories.
