The Oklahoma Sooners have earned their second verbal towards their 2004 recruiting class.
D.J. Wolfe (6'0, 195, 4.4) of Lawton Eisenhower, Oklahoma told the Oklahoma coaches last night that he wanted to be a Sooner.
"I knew where I wanted to go all along and I didn't think it made any sense to wait any longer," said Wolfe. "First, let me take the time to thank Kansas State, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State for offering me. I just felt that OU was the place for me. They have a great system and I really like Coach (Cale) Gundy and the OU coaching staff. OU is the best place where I can go where I can get a great education, play for a great program and win."
Wolfe is considered the best running back in the state and one of the top three prospects in the state. Wolfe will be ranked as one of the top 15 running backs in the country early and is certain to move up the rankings.
As a junior Wolfe rushed for 1,334 yards on 160 carries at 8.34 yards per carry and found the end zone 22 times. He also scored four touchdowns receiving and returned on kickoff over 80 yards for a touchdown. Wolfe is outstanding on kickoff returns averaging 26 yards per return.
Wolfe operates out of the split back offense at Eisenhower and he feels the OU offense is a perfect fit for him.
"I think OU runs a great system and if you are an all-around running back like I am, then it is perfect for you," said Wolfe. "It is a great offense for a running back, because you get a chance to run the ball, catch the ball and block. You get a chance to be a complete player and that is the kind of running back that I want to be."
Many folks down in Lawton compare Wolfe to former Sooner great Demond Parker, and most feel that Wolfe has better all-around potential than former Sooner Dewell Brewer, who was a star at Lawton High School before starting for four years at OU.
