Venables Leaving For Clemson

NORMAN, Okla. — Mike Stoops has returned to the Sooner staff, but Brent Venables is officially out and headed to Clemson to serve as defensive coordinator, confirmed Wednesday night.

Multiple sources confirmed this news earlier in the evening, but Venables promptly sent a text out stating "I'm staying."

Then, Clemson Board of Trustees Chair David Wilkins told the Charleston Post & Courier that there was "no action taken...there has been no meeting" and "we have to approve [any contract]."

Tigers athletic director Terry Don Phillips also told several South Carolina media outlets no official contract offer had been made to Venables.

That apparently changed as of late tonight, and he's on his way east to the ACC to work for head coach Dabo Swinney.

More on the way as it becomes available.

Head coach Bob Stoops has yet to comment on the matter, and a release is expected.

The Sooners will now move Mike to defensive coordinator and seek a linebackers coach.
