NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma men's basketball head coach Kelvin Sampson announced that Jimmy Tobias, a 6-4, 190-pound wing from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., signed a national letter of intent during the late signing period to play for the Sooners next fall. Tobias is the final member of OU's 2003 recruiting class.
A first-team all-state selection at Dillard High School, Tobias averaged 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 3.0 assists per game last year. He led his team to a 32-1 record, a Class 6A state title and a No. 18 USA Today final national ranking. The state championship was his third in a row as a member of the Dillard program. Tobias averaged 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per contest as a junior when he was a second-team all-state selection. He was coached by Darryl Burrows.
"One of the things we've always felt strongly about with our program is the importance of outstanding guard play," commented Sampson. "Jimmy Tobias is an outstanding guard. He was the best player on one of the best teams in the nation last year, so that says something right there. Jimmy is a wing who can flat out score. He's an athletic kid who can really get to the rim and just has the ability to do a lot of things. He'll be another in a long line of great wing players we've had at OU.
"And he's a great kid, too," continued Sampson. "Jimmy has integrity and character and has worked extremely hard to improve his grades."
Named the South Florida Sun-Sentinel Player of the Year, Tobias scored seven points in a 10-second span in a game versus Boyd Anderson High School last year. He went on to be named the state tournament's final four most valuable player.
Tobias will join 5-7 McDonald's All-America guard Andrew Lavender, 6-1 guard Lawrence McKenzie, 6-6 forward Brandon Foust and 6-3 guard Jaison Williams as newcomers on next year's Oklahoma squad. OU's recruiting class has been ranked as one of the nation's top five by multiple analysts and services
