Sooners Ink 25 Signees

NORMAN, Okla. — The Sooners went to the JUCO ranks and made their money there on National Signing Day, signing a pair of the best in the country as part of their 25 signees for the 2012 class, including 19 on the big day.

Wide receiver Courtney Gardner, previously committed to Arkansas, visited OU over the weekend, enjoyed it and accordingly switched his commitment and sent in his letter of intent paperwork to the Sooners, while running back Damien Williams also selected the Sooners, choosing them over Texas Tech.

Both were uncommitted heading into the day.

OU signed 17 other players to go along with their six early enrollees (CB Kass Everett, TEs Brannon Green and Taylor McNamara, WR Trey Metoyer, DE Chaz Nelson and DT Jordan Wade), including 12 on the offensive side of the ball and five defensive signees.

Offensively, the Sooners signed wide receivers, Durron Neal, Sterling Shepard and Derrick Woods, running backs Alex Ross and David Smith, guards John Michael McGee and Kyle Marrs, center Ty Darlington, JUCO tackle Will Latu, tight end Sam Grant and quarterback Trevor Knight.

Athlete Daniel Brooks joins this group as well.

Defensively, defensive ends Mike Onuoha and Charles Tapper signed, as well as cornerbacks Zack Sanchez and Gary Simon and outside linebacker Eric Striker.

All in all, the class finishes with a five-star signee, eight four-stars and 16 three-stars and ranks eighth with a point total of 3,598 with a few hours pending for other schools to complete their signing festivities.

The Sooners began the day at No. 10 and moved up two spots due to some nice pickups.

That puts them second among Big 12 Conference schools, with Texas leading all classes at 5,156 points.

Texas Tech is the only other Big 12 program to finish in the Top 25, as Oklahoma State and Baylor narrowly miss out at 28th and 30th, respectively.
