RECRUITING: OU's WR search heads West

Long Beach, Calif. receiver Derrick Jones gives his early lists and talks about his interest in OU

Jones is a two-year starter at one of the very best programs in the country, and that in itself is saying something. Now throw in the fact that he is the playmaker for this powerful program and then you really have something. Jones caught 37 passes for 1,436 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. Folks, that is a 37.6 yards per catch average.

"Most of the time I just run deep routes and that is how I get most of my yards, by catching the long ball," said Jones. "I did make a couple of big plays by catching screens."

As a sophomore Jones came up with 23 catches for 670 yards and 11 touchdowns at 38 yards per catch. Jones went to the USC Nike camp, but didn't perform at the camp. Jones doesn't plan to go to any other camps at this time. In track, Jones won the junior nationals in the 100-meter dash in an amazing time of 10.3 seconds. Jones is also very fast in the 200-meters running a quick 20.6 and he even braches out to 45.7 in the 400-meters.

"I want to play football and run track as well," said Jones. "I love football, but I have dreams of running in the Olympic Games. Everybody that is recruiting me is telling me that I can do both sports."

Jones has more offers than he can count, and he is working to narrow down his choices.

"I like USC, Oregon, Florida State, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State and UCLA and all of those schools have offered me. I like the Sooners quite a bit, because they pass the ball and I am trying to find out more about their program. I know they have a great head coach and a great coaching staff. I really don't have a true favorite right now, but I will work to get my choices down to five by the time football starts."
