It marks the first career weekly honor for Okert, who transferred to OU after two years at Grayson County College. He was honored by the conference this week alongside Texas A&M's Rob Stripling (pitcher) and Kansas State's Wade Hinkle (player).
The Rowlett, Texas, native became the first Big 12 pitcher to defeat Baylor in 2012 after 1 1/3 scoreless innings in OU's 1-0 victory in the series opener on Saturday. In game two of the doubleheader on Saturday, Okert again appeared in relief and tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings for his third save of the season.
In addition to recording a win and a save in the same day, Okert posted a 0.00 ERA in three innings against the No. 2 Bears with one hit, zero walks and three strikeouts. Okert threw 34 pitches in the two outings and 26 were strikes.
Okert ranks second on the Sooners in wins (6) and saves (3). He also ranks eighth in the Big 12 in victories. Okert has not allowed an earned run in 12 of his 18 relief appearances.
It marks the eighth conference honor won by a Sooner this season, the most by an OU team since Big 12 play began in 1997 (OU had six in 2004).
Most recently, Max White was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on April 30. Redshirt sophomore Damien Magnifico was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on April 16 while freshman Hunter Lockwood was named the player and newcomer of the week on April 2. On March 12, both Dillon Overton (pitcher) and Jonathan Gray (newcomer) were honored and on March 5, Jordan John was named the pitcher of the week.
Following the midweek game, OU closes the regular season with a three-game series with Samford on Thursday (6:30 p.m.), Friday (6:30 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.)
