Oberste's blasts send OU to Big 12 Title Game

OKLAHOMA CITY — Any way you put it, the Sooners just have the Baylor Bears' number.

Designated hitter Matt Oberste hit a pair of home runs and the Sooners claimed their fifth victory of the season over the Bears, as they stormed past Baylor 7-2 to move into Sunday's Big 12 Championship game at 1 p.m. against either Kansas or Missouri.

OU was able to do so by leaping out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

Shortstop Caleb Bushyhead traded places with second baseman Jack Mayfield on an RBI double; then, Oberste cranked a first-pitch fastball out of Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark to left.

Oberste got back to work by slamming another shot to left, a solo homer, in the fourth.

After Baylor catcher Josh Ludy cut into the deficit with a solo shot of his own also to left, OU really put the hurt on in the fifth.

Center fielder Max White ripped a two-run double into the right center gap, and third baseman Evan Mistich followed up with an RBI single scoring White and pushing the Sooners out to a 7-1 lead.

And that proved to be all the scoring the Sooners would need, considering how dominant starter Jonathan Gray was.

He lasted 7 2/3 innings, giving up just a pair of earned runs to one of the most potent offenses in the Big 12 and striking out six, while walking just one in the victory.

Ludy connected for an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, his second run-scoring hit of the day, to cap off the scoring.

Pitcher Joey Hainsfurther was tagged with the loss for the Bears after logging just 3 1/3 innings and surrendering four earned runs, including the two Oberste homers.

OU has now won five straight since suffering back-to-back losses to TCU and Samford and taken eight of its last 10 heading into the Big 12 Title Game.
