Sooners headed to Charlottesville Regional

NORMAN, Okla. — If the Sooners are to make a trip back to the College World Series, their path will again have to go through Charlottesville, Va.

They'll serve as the two seed and take on No. 3 Appalachian State, with top-ranked Virginia facing No. 4 seed Army.

The winner of the Charlottesville Regional is set to face the Columbia Regional winner, featuring No. 8 national seed and back-to-back National Champion South Carolina.

In 2010, OU knocked off Virginia in a Super Regional en route to its first berth in Omaha since 1995 at the time.

It'll likely have to defeat the Cavaliers twice to advance, but the first task is a 39-16 Appalachian State Mountaineers squad that lost to Furman in the Southern Conference Championship.

The Mountaineers beat common foe Samford two out of three, as did the Sooners, so the opening matchup should be very competitive.

Play will open up Friday and go through Sunday/Monday.
