Meeting the team: offensive player No. 2

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated continues on with the second day of the newest SI feature.

Player: Tyrus Thompson

Hometown: Pflugerville, Texas

Class: Redshirt sophomore

Height & Weight: 6-foot-5, 297 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup left tackle

The rundown: Thompson hasn't played a whole lot of meaningful minutes for the Sooners so far in his career, but he did manage to see some action last year. He played in five games in a reserve offensive tackle role in 2011. That came after redshirting his first season in 2010 upon emerging amongst the college landscape as a four-star and the No. 18 offensive tackle and 29th-ranked player in the state of Texas. So, he's got some experience and certainly should have a firm grasp of the offensive system by now.

Expectations for 2012: Look for Thompson to have an increased role on the offensive line, even though he won't start. The big third-year tackle will be behind Lane Johnson in the rotation for quarterback Landry Jones' blindside. He's also competing with guys like Daryl Williams (probable starter) and Derek Farniok for a spot in the rotation. Thompson has as good a chance as any reserve to fight for a spot and should be right in the mix there.
