Meeting the team: offensive player No. 6

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated now presents the sixth day getting you acquainted with the team.

Player: Austin Woods

Hometown: Rockwall, Texas

Class: Junior

Height & Weight: 6-foot-4, 290 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup center, long snapper

The rundown: Woods played in four games last year as a member of the offensive line. In those four, he recorded a pair of knockdowns on 34 snaps. In addition to that, he served as the deep snapper in field goal formation and earned Academic All-Big 12 first team honors. It was his second straight season working in the long snapper role on place kicks after arriving as a four-star product from Rockwall-Heath HS.

Expectations for 2012: He's listed as one of the reserve centers behind starter Ben Habern, but it's more likely that he would have been the third guy in the rotation had he not been diagnosed with lymphoma that required chemotherapy in early May. Left guard Gabe Ikard would again shift over to snapper on offense should anything happen to Habern. Despite that, Woods will continue to prove critical in the deep snapper role as a member of the special teams unit when he's healthy in addition to getting backup center reps. But if and when he returns is uncertain.
