Meeting the team: offensive player No. 12

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated is nearing the halfway point of introducing the offense, and the next member is inside.

Player: Brannon Green

Hometown: Altamont, Kan.

Class: Junior

Height & Weight: 6-foot-4, 260 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Starting tight end

The rundown: The Sooners were in dire need of a tight-end following last season and picked up what figures to be a very reliable one from the JUCO route in Green. He dons the Crimson and Cream uniform after catching 15 passes for 213 yards in eight games last year as a sophomore for Fort Scott. That placed him on the All-Jayhawk Conference second team list. Green arrived for spring ball and has that experience of learning some of the system already under his belt.

Expectations for 2012: Green is the definite starter over fellow incoming tight end Taylor McNamara. But the competition among two complementary tight ends will prove valuable. As with all tight ends, Green will be charged with the task of being a solid blocking tight end, while also having an expectation to give OU a receiving threat after losing James Hanna and Trent Ratterree. Especially with wide receivers Jaz Reynolds and Trey Franks losing their scholarships, assuming they don't come back, the tight end role in the receiving game becomes that much more important.
