Meeting the team: offensive player No. 14

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated now presents the 14th day getting you acquainted with the new team.

Player: Dominique Whaley

Hometown: Lawton, Okla.

Class: Senior

Height & Weight: 5-foot-10, 197 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Starting running back

The rundown: Whaley was one of the team's best stories last year until he broke his ankle in a road contest at Kansas State. That sidelined him for the rest of the season and spring ball. But before that, the former walk-on was the No. 1 back and earned a scholarship at mid-year for his services which included 627 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 113 carries. Despite missing the final five games of the season, he still led the team with his rushing total and averaged 5.5 yards per carry, while posting three 100-yard outings. One of those featured a program-record 131 yards in a career debut. All of that led to All-Big 12 honorable mention by the coaches.

Expectations for 2012: He is right there amongst the Big 12's best running backs and will secure some type of All-Big 12 honors provided he stays healthy. But more importantly, Whaley will again anchor a talented group of backs hoping to improve from their 2011 middle-of-the-pack rushing rank in the Big 12. Whaley tallying a 1,000-yard season is not out of the question if he really gets it going and hits his stride early on. Look for a breakout year from the well-traveled senior.
