Meeting the team: offensive player No. 16

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated now presents the 16th day getting you acquainted with the new team.

Player: Roy Finch

Hometown: Niceville, Fla.

Class: Junior

Height & Weight: 5-foot-7, 166 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup running back

The rundown: Like the previous player on our feature, Finch was a backup to starter Dominique Whaley until he went down with a broke ankle. But unlike the last player, Finch stepped in as the starter after that. He finished second on the team with 605 rushing yards on 111 carries and also found the end zone three times. His long run of the year was a 55-yard scamper, and he also contributed some in the slot after Ryan Broyles tore his ACL. There, Finch managed 296 yards on 34 catches. All of that allowed him to gain honorable mention All-Big 12 honors.

Expectations for 2012: Again, the former four-star back out of high school will be set for a backup role behind Whaley, who should be full strength. While Whaley is clearly the best power back OU has, Finch's shiftiness is always lethal. He has the ability to make defenders miss with his lateral movement, and that's one reason putting him in the slot is something else the Sooners could do again. He gives OU great flexibility in terms of what they want to do offensively at times. Therefore, though not the starter, Finch's responsibility is just to step in, be reliable and contribute when Whaley heads to the sidelines.
