Meeting the team: offensive player No. 22

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated is nearing the end of the offensive side, presenting day 22 now.

Player: Durron Neal

Hometown: St. Louis, Mo.

Class: Freshman

Height & Weight: 6-foot, 185 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup receiver

The rundown: Neal has arrived for summer workouts after emerging as a four-star prospect and the 18th overall receiver in the 2012 class. He comes in as one of the most explosive receivers in perhaps the best receiving class ever. Recently there were reports of him sustaining a knee injury. However, he's healthy and busting through the weight room heading into his first fall camp.

Expectations for 2012: No one ever expects a true freshman to step in and start or even play very much, for that matter. But Trey Metoyer is going to do it, and Neal also has the opportunity to see the field because he is so incredibly talented and the Sooners are likely without a couple key guys. Both Jaz Reynolds and Trey Franks are suspended indefinitely and it could stay that way, meaning at the very least Neal's impact from a depth standpoint becomes more important. Likely, he'll play a special teams role, as wide receivers coach Jay Norvell prefers his guys to get involved that way. And he has the chance to join the fray amongst Metoyer, Kenny Stills and Kameel Jackson, plus Courtney Gardner, once he qualifies.
