Meeting the team: offensive player No. 25

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated presents the final day of getting you acquainted with the offense.

Player: Drew Allen

Hometown: San Antonio, Texas

Class: Redshirt junior

Height & Weight: 6-foot-5, 226 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup quarterback

The rundown: He has served as the backup to Landry Jones for the last two seasons, totaling 18 completions in 30 attempts, while throwing for 160 yards over that time span. The former Alamo Heights HS star has seen action in five contests in each of 2010 and 2011, completing a season-high four passes for 24 yards against Tulsa last year. He finished 10-of-18 for 72 yards in the Red-White Spring Game as he battled it out with Blake Bell for the No. 1 reserve spot.

Expectations for 2012: It's likely that Blake Bell seized command of the backup position when he threw for 179 yards and a touchdown to Allen's total. He just looked more crisp than did Allen. Still, Allen is the more veteran of the two, lending at least some evidence that he could still be the favorite heading into fall camp if the coaches don't weigh spring ball that heavily. Regardless, Jones is the team's guy and Allen just has to be prepared to battle it out for the backup spot and go in there if needed in Jones' absence.
