NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated now presents the fourth day getting you acquainted with the defense.

Player: Jamarkus McFarland

Hometown: Lufkin, Texas

Class: Senior

Height & Weight: 6-foot-2, 288 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Starting defensive tackle

The rundown: McFarland is a returning starter on the interior defensive line, as he got the nod there in seven games last year. He played in all 13 Sooner contests last season, recording a career-high five tackles in the Insight Bowl against Iowa. He also had three of his 20 total tackles in a 41-38 loss to Texas Tech at home. McFarland additionally finished with 3.5 tackles for loss and a half sack, plus a pass breakup. He's tallied 51 tackles, including 11 for loss and 4.5 sacks throughout his career.

Expectations for 2012: He is one of the most important players for this team in 2012. He'll be a preseason All-Big 12 first team tackle and the production that entails is essential for this defense. McFarland needs to be the guy up front that creates some havoc and floods the run game. He's an experienced guy, a veteran and will be relied upon to have a big time year.
