Player: Jordan Phillips
Hometown: Towanda, Kan.
Class: Redshirt freshman
Height & Weight: 6-foot-6, 318 pounds
Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup defensive tackle
The rundown: The former No. 1 player in Kansas and No. 6 overall Scout.com defensive tackle in the 2011 class is more than ready for his second year at OU. He redshirted last year after getting a late start with the team, but that certainly helped him learn the system and what position coach Jackie Shipp asks of him. Phillips showed it with his disruptiveness in the Red-White spring game, where he had a couple of tackles, including one for loss. He's shed some pounds in the offseason, 11 to be exact, so that should help his agility up front in beating interior offensive linemen.
Expectations for 2012: Don't be too surprised if Phillips really makes his presence felt off the Sooner bench. He'll be a two-deep player and one that will see the field this year. Many have labeled him as the next big playmaking defensive tackle, and he can start on that course this year. But there's no question he'll be behind Jamarkus McFarland and Casey McGee, the two likely starters.
