Meeting the team: defensive player No. 9

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated presents the next day getting you acquainted with the defense.

Player: Torrea Peterson

Hometown: San Antonio, Texas

Class: Redshirt sophomore

Height & Weight: 6-foot-3, 277 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup defensive tackle

The rundown: Continuing the trend of interior defensive linemen doing some shedding in the offseason is the former East Central High School product. He's dropped from 292 to 277 between spring ball and now, and that puts him in much better shape to see the field. Speaking of seeing the field, Peterson participated in five 2011 games, including the Red River Rivalry game against Texas in which he recorded his lone tackle for loss He finished the campaign with three total tackles.

Expectations for 2012: Also similar to some of the previous defensive tackles, Peterson is fighting a long list of very quality players at the position. He'll play some again this year, but don't look for any kind of major impact. He could get some stops and play in more than half of the games, but sitting behind the starters, Jamarkus McFarland and Casey Walker, among others, will limit his affect on this defense.
