Meeting the team: defensive player No. 10

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated presents yet another day getting you acquainted with the defense.

Player: R.J. Washington

Hometown: Fort Worth, Texas

Class: Redshirt senior

Height & Weight: 6-foot-3, 256 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Starting defensive end

The rundown: Washington finally moves into a starting spot after three years as a reserve defensive end. Still, he played in 13 games last year and picked up 16 tackles, including five for loss, all five sacks, and five pass breakups. He recorded sacks in four different games and put together his first career multi-sack game in the Insight Bowl against Iowa. Washington, who has played in 26 games at OU, has made a little change in the offseason from No. 91 to No. 11.

Expectations for 2012: For the first real time, he has Sooner fans' hope for big production. OU's defensive success will largely hinge on their outside defensive line play and how much pressure those guys can get on the quarterback, including Washington. So, naturally the coaching staff will look to put him in pass rushing situations where he can beat he guy around the edge. A good year would have him at least doubling his 2011 numbers.
