Meeting the team: defensive player No. 12

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated presents yet another day getting you acquainted with the defense.

Player: Tom Wort

Hometown: New Braunfels, Texas

Class: Redshirt junior

Height & Weight: 6-foot, 237 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Starting middle linebacker

The rundown: Wort is back for his third year as a starting backer after finishing fourth on the team with 71 total tackles in 2011. Out of those, he had 4.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and a pair of interceptions and pass breakups plus a fumble recovery. All of that gained him honorable mention All-Big 12 honors, something he hopes to expand upon this season.

Expectations for 2012: At the beginning of last year, Wort had to take command of this defense in Travis Lewis' absence due to injury. This time, he'll have to take command of the defense in Lewis' permanent absence. Wort is now the leader on the defensive side of the ball, where he could lead the team in tackles. He should be a certain first team All-Big 12 selection based off what projects to be big numbers.
