Meeting the team: defensive player No. 15

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated continues on getting you acquainted with the defense.

Player: Frank Shannon

Hometown: Dallas, Texas

Class: Redshirt freshman

Height & Weight: 6-foot-1, 230 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup linebacker

The rundown: Shannon got to redshirt and see the system for a year behind veteran linebacker Travis Lewis and the rest of the group. Now, it's time for him to step into the linebacking corps himself during his second season in the Crimson and Cream. He's a former four-star prospect and the No. 17 overall safety in the 2011 class. Shannon is one of three Skyline High School players on the OU roster.

Expectations for 2012: With the limited depth, Shannon could see some time, though he figures to be behind the rest of the pack. The clear-cut starters are Tom Wort, Joseph Ibiloye and one of Shannon's two high school teammates, Corey Nelson. But that doesn't mean he won't step in at times in a reserve role. Fans shouldn't expect much production yet in his career, however. The safety-converted-linebacker did record a tackle in the spring game.
