Meeting the team: defensive player No. 17

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated continues on getting you acquainted with the defense.

Player: Aaron Franklin

Hometown: Marshall, Texas

Class: Redshirt sophomore

Height & Weight: 6-foot-1, 212 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup weak side linebacker

The rundown: This third-year Sooner participated in 10 games a year ago, recording four tackles, a pair of which were unassisted. Two of those stops came against Iowa State. Though he was a reserve linebacker, Franklin spent most of his playing time on special teams. A former four-star Scout.com recruit, he was also a first team Academic All-Big 12 recipient last year.

Expectations for 2012: Franklin should crack his way into the two-deep this time around after redshirting and playing in that mostly special teams role the previous two seasons. He'll be behind Corey Nelson on the depth chart, so that'll mean he'll have to fight for much playing time still. Expect him to contribute again on special teams in a similar way to 2011.
