Meeting the team: defensive player No. 23

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated is just two days away from the end of the getting you acquainted special with this defensive member.

Player: Demontre Hurst

Hometown: Lancaster, Texas

Class: Senior

Height & Weight: 5-foot-10, 183 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Starting field corner

The rundown: Hurst has been a starter at the field position for the last two years, including 27 total games. He's played in all 40 games since arriving on campus back in 2009. Each of the past two years he's come up with 11 pass breakups, leading the team in 2011. Last year, he finished with 55 tackles, including four for loss and a couple of fumble recoveries, an interception, as well as a forced fumble. That was good enough for second-team All-Big 12 honors.

Expectations for 2012: With a big season, he can be right on the fringe of earning first-team All-Big 12 honors. But he's more likely a second-team members just based on the prestige of upper echelon defensive backs in the league this year. Still, he's the veteran and leader of this secondary, which means he has to come up with some huge plays once again. He'll probably lead the team again in pass breakups and also come up with multiple interceptions.
