Meeting the team: defensive player No. 25

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated now presents the final day getting you acquainted with the defense.

Player: Joe Powell

Hometown: Dallas, Texas

Class: Junior

Height & Weight: 6-foot, 173 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup corner

The rundown: After switching from corner to wide receiver, then back to corner for spring ball, he's preparing for his third season in the Crimson and Cream. Powell has recorded five career tackles, all of which came last year. He's been a special teams contributor while competing in nine games throughout two seasons so far. Powell notched a career-high two tackles against Texas Tech in 2011 and switched to wide out for the Insight Bowl due to a lack of receiver depth after Ryan Broyles went down earlier in the season.

Expectations for 2012: Powell is clearly on the two line for the Sooner depth chart this fall camp. But the shakeups in defensive philosophy with the new 4-2-5 formation will afford him more opportunities to get on the field. He should see some playing time and contribute with a few tackles. His statistics will depend on the rotation and how defensive coordinator Mike Stoops runs corners in and out.
