RECRUITING: Florida LB says OU is No. 1

Ft. Lauderdale linebacker says Oklahoma currently tops his list of four schools

Vernon is another one of those monster linebacker prospects out in Florida who has college football coaches from coast-to-coast salivating at the mouth. Big, strong and fast, Smith is exactly what division-one college football coaches are looking for to play outside linebacker. Smith transferred in from North Lauderdale Academy, where he started for three seasons before transferring.

"I moved to Dillard because they fired my head football coach at North Lauderdale Academy," said Smith. "Plus, I wanted to go somewhere where I can get a state championship ring. Dillard has a great football program, one of the best every year in Florida. I think we have a good chance to win a state championship.

Smith finished with 102 tackles, eight sacks, six tackles for a loss, two interceptions and two caused fumbles at outside linebacker. Smith has also played inside linebacker in the past, but feels his skills are better suited for outside at the next level.

"I think most coaches see me as an outside linebacker," said Smith. "I think you get more action and more tackles outside. You get to use your athletic ability a little bit more."

Smith can bench 340 pounds, squast 405 and he has a 29-inch vertical jump. Smith has came back from the senior camp at Florida and liked what he saw.

"Florida is a pretty good school," said Smith. "They have a pretty good program over there."

In recruiting Smith is looking at Oklahoma, Florida, Iowa and Miami, and they have all offered.

"Oklahoma is my number one school on my list," said Smith. "They have a good linebacker tradition and Coach (Brent) Venables is one of the best linebacker coaches in the country. I also think Coach (Darrell) Wyatt is a good guy and I enjoy talking to him. I still have to find out a lot about their school, but I know they have a great football program, and I know that it is one of the very best in the country."

Smith plans on going through the recruiting process.
