Wednesday with Bob Stoops: 10-17

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooner head coach Bob Stoops' weekly call-in show has been one of the hottest talks of the season so far, but recently it's underwent a change.

Stoops has elected to stop fielding on-air calls from viewers.

"Yeah, we got tired of too many," Stoops said. "And you know what? I don't know why I was doing it. I talked to four or five coaches. They were like, ‘I haven't been doing that for eight years, 10 years.' One guy told me 10 years. I'm like, ‘What? How come no one told me?' I'm sitting here listening to these people. You know, I don't know."

One of those coaches he talked to was Texas Tech head man Tommy Tuberville.

"Tommy goes, he goes, ‘Shoot, it's been two or three years,'" Stoops said. "'I go, ‘Really?' I go, ‘How come you didn't call me and tell me because I should have?' And then a couple other coaches I then called and I'm not gonna say any names. One guy said, ‘Shoot, I haven't taken one in 10 years.' I'm like, ‘Again, nobody tipped me off.'"

The main issue with the call-ins is that Stoops felt he had to field too many "nonsense" questions.

That is to say, too many people were calling to the show with what he deems unjust criticisms.

"I, in the end, just like with you guys I feel when fair criticism I get and I, for the most part, have owned up to it. Stuff that isn't, just because we may lose a game isn't gonna give someone the right to just call what they want if I don't agree with the perception or if I don't feel it's correct. And I don't have to sit there and take it, whether it's fan or whether it's a media person."

Then, there's something else.

Something Stoops has always been adamant about: protecting the 105 guys in his locker room.

"And I strongly believe more than that that it's my right to stick up for my players when I know they've played hard, they have invested and just because they make a mistake or two, they didn't do it intentionally," Stoops said. "It doesn't give people the right to then tee off on them, and I don't have to sit and take it. And if I ever do, then I'll do something else."

So there.

That's why the weekly call-in show Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Red Lobster has been amended.
