Big 12 teleconference: Bob Stoops transcribed

NORMAN, Okla. — Head coach Bob Stoops got on the conference call again this morning to review the loss to Notre Dame, and Sooners Illustrated has all the discussion.

Q-Bob, when you look at Iowa State's sort of scheme and personnel, how would you kind of compare it to what Notre Dame does defensively?

A- Well, their scheme's different...Defensively they're similar in some of their coverages and how they play. They play very well, very disciplined, very good. You look at them, they're third in the league in scoring defense. And they're front's played a little different. You know, Notre Dame's primarily a 50 front, and Iowa State isn't primarily that. So, that part's a little bit different and personnel wise, it's just hard to tell until you get on the field with them.

Q-When you play defenses that have so much strength at linebacker, what's your sort of attitude towards approaching that?

A- Well, our attitude is never based on just the linebackers. So, it's more based on the entire defense and where you feel you match up well in what you want to do. So, it's never just about the linebackers.

Q-I wonder how your team attitude wise will react. It's a devastating loss at home, an elite game, it was late in the year and there's a lot of things you guys had possibly for goals at the beginning of the year. Many of those are gone now. What kind of team do you expect to come out for the rest of the year?

A- I think it'll be very positive and very determined to move forward. We still have a lot at stake in the conference, and that matters. It isn't just solely on a national championship. It never has been, never will be. There is a lot more to it, and our guys will react in a positive way and keep moving forward and playing well. You know, they understand they're a very good football team. We were toe-to-toe with them to the end, and they made a few plays down the stretch that we didn't.

Q-Bob, after seeing him live in the flesh on Saturday night, does [Manti] Te'o deserve Heisman consideration?

A- I think absolutely. I've always felt there's been defensive guys that should strongly be in the equation. Being an old defensive coordinator, I think it's been wrong for so many years that they haven't been. But I think definitely, you know, he should be.

Q-Did he surprise you by how good he was, the way he took over I guess from almost The Opening kickoff?

A- No. I mean, I'm not sure what you mean. I mean listen, I think the guy's excellent, but I'm not sure what you mean by take over.

Q-Well, he made a lot of tackles and big plays:

A- Yeah again, I'm not taking anything away, but you know, we did throw the ball for 365 yards. So, we did some things, too, I'm saying against the defense, not against him. But in the end, I'm not sure I totally understand the way you phrased that.
