OU-ULM: Report Card

NORMAN, Okla. — The grades are in from OU's season-opening 85-51 Sunday afternoon victory over Louisiana-Monroe.

Overall team performance: A

It was a bit of a slow start, but that's somewhat to be expected the first game of the season. OU quickly recovered from that, and it wasn't ever really close after The Opening 10 minutes. The Sooners shot it 47.1 percent, while limiting the Warhawks to 34.5 percent field goal shooting. They distributed 20 assists to just 12 turnovers, with the three freshmen guards Isaiah Cousins, Je'lon Hornbeak and Buddy Hield combining for 11 assists to their five turnovers. The three senior veterans, forwards Romero Osby and Andrew Fitzgerald and guard Steven Pledger, also had solid performances while joining forces for 36 points.

F Amath M'Baye: A-

His regular season debut as a Sooner went basically according to plan, as he poured in 12 points to go along with nine boards, a near double-double. The former Wyoming transfer from Bordeaux, France, also tallied a pair of blocks and assists, despite turning it over four times. He logged 22 minutes while going 6-for-9 from the field.

F Romero Osby: A

Osby didn't play a ton of minutes, but he was efficient in those that he did. he finished with nine points and seven rebounds, while getting involved with all of the hustle stats, including three blocks, a steal and assist. He was 3-for-5 from the floor with a 3-pointer and converted both of his free throw attempts.

G Steven Pledger: A

Pledger fended off foul trouble to lead the team in scoring with his 15 on 5-of-10 shooting. All five of those were 3-pointers, where he shot a sizzling 55.6 percent from beyond the arc. Perhaps more importantly than that, though, he helped guide the trio of new guards through their first official collegiate game, and there's a lot to be said for that. Their progress this season rides a lot on how well Pledger pulls them along.

G Je'lon Hornbeak: A+

Certainly it was a solid outing for the first of three newcomers in Hornbeak. And he had the best outing for any of those guys, notching 10 points and five boards, while most impressively distributing five assists to zero turnovers. Unheard of for a true freshman in his first game. Hornbeak, who finished 4-for-10 shooting, also added a pair of steals and a blocked shot.

G Isaiah Cousins: A-

The stat sheet might not look quite as impressive for the second true freshman, but he was effective as well, nonetheless. The starting point guard delivered five assists to one turnover and hit a couple of free throws while pulling down three rebounds to go along with two steals. Cousins' only blemish on his stat line was an 0-for-3 showing shooting the ball.

Bench: A+

It's safe to say this is one of the more impressive bench showings for the Sooners in quite some time. Nearly half of their 85 points came from their reserves, 37 to be exact. Leading that was Fitzgerald, who scored 12 in a new role off the bench this time around. Third new guard Buddy Hield finished second with his nine, while forward Tyler Neal had nine as well. Everyone on the roster that entered the game added points. OU outscored its ULM counterparts by 23 in this capacity.
