That all changed when OU received a verbal from defensive tackle Kerrick Huggins just about a week ago.
Head coach Bob Stoops wasn't shy in stating the magnitude of that one.
"Quincy's a huge [pickup], definitely a difference maker for us," Stoops said. "And yeah, sure we're excited about him."
They're not done with that position, though.
In fact, Stoops said he could see them signing as much as two more defensive tackles.
"Oh, absolutely," Stoops said. "You know, we're still recruiting and so we're still working in a lot of positions. Definitely."
One of them is the aforementioned offensive line, where OU picked up commitments from tackles Christian Daimler and Josiah St. John Wednesday as well in totaling their three verbals on the day.
That raised their ranking to from No. 20 to No. 14 in the FOX Sports NEXT recruiting rankings.
"Dang, I need to go look," Stoops joked. "Right? Well, there will be another panic tomorrow. Why the sky is falling tomorrow for OU football? OK. Someone will dream something up to get all the fans in a tizzy and yeah."
For now, however, they've made a nice little leap.
And they've got some momentum.
"Listen, we're not close to being done either," Stoops said. "I mean we still got guys to sign and we're still recruiting hard and still feel like we're recruiting a lot of good football players. So, we'll keep at it."
Not only did they land their positions of need up front, but they also got a special teams signee as well as part of their two JUCO signatures, punter Jed Barnett from Contra Costa.
"Jed's a heck of a punter, too," Stoops said. "So, love his hang time. Averages over 40. And with losing Tress [Way], we got some young guys coming up, I believe, are gonna be good. That gives me more comfort."
That comfort is abound at this time for all of Sooner Nation.
