Patton out, heading to Indiana

NORMAN, Okla. — James Patton will not be back as Sooners centers/offensive guards coach in 2013, confirmed Monday morning.

After seven seasons coaching OU's offensive line, he'll no longer do so when OU opens up the season next year, and instead he'll head to Indiana to work on Kevin Wilson's staff.

"Our family has enjoyed a tremendous experience at the University of Oklahoma," Patton said. "It has truly been a pleasure to work with Joe Castiglione, Coach Stoops and the entire football staff, as well as the many talented student-athletes that I was privileged to coach at OU. I'm excited about this new challenge at Indiana, and am extremely grateful for being afforded a chance to work with Oklahoma Football the past seven years."

Head coach Bob Stoops also released his statement in regards to the news.

"We appreciate the contributions that James made to our program over the past seven seasons," Stoops said. "He was a valued member of a staff that helped us win five Big 12 championships. We wish James and his family the best in this opportunity with Kevin Wilson at Indiana."

As can be expected, there's some backlash or at least disappointment from the players he's coached and bonded with and they've expressed it via Twitter.

"Going to miss Coach Patton and I wish him the best of luck. "Dare Greatly...," said guard Bronson Irwin."

Said center/guard Gabe Ikard: "Coach Patton is my favorite coach I've had. Taught me a lot about football and a lot about life. Really going to miss him. "Dare greatly.""

Even 2013 OU offensive lineman signee Christian Daimler got in the fray when he tweeted the following: "Damn. Coach Pattons gone."

While at OU, Patton coached a number of All-Americans, including Duke Robinson, Phil Loadholt and Trent Williams, as well as Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year Jon Cooper and produced an All-Big 12 player in Ikard.

The top replacement for the position figures to be Mark Mangino, and Sooners Illustrated will be on top of the latest with the assistant coaching search.
