Baseball postseason breakdown series: day IV

NORMAN, Okla. — The fourth day of the series is now in, as Sooners Illustrated discusses the most heart-wrenching defeat in 2013.

May 17, 2013—KSU 6, OU 5

With a regular season Big 12 Championship crown still in the balance pending an OU sweep over the Wildcats and OU holding a 4-0 sixth-inning lead in game one, things really unraveled down the stretch. OU gave up a three-spot in the sixth to let K-State back in it, then surrendered its lead in the seventh. The Wildcats added another in the eighth to take their first lead of the game, and just when it looked like the Sooners might still have one final push towards their preseason predicted first place finish, K-State stabbed them in the heart. Sooner second baseman Jack Mayfield tied things up with a ninth-inning jack, but a wild pitch from reliable OU closer Jacob Evans allowed the Wildcats to walk off and dog pile in front of a dejected Sooner squad. It capped off an unsettling final three weeks of the regular season for OU, who fell from first to fourth in the standings.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's version of the postseason breakdown series.
