Thompson out with right foot fracture

And the Oklahoma quarterback race is down to two before things really even get started.

OU sophomore quarterback Kendal Thompson will miss the rest of fall practice with a right foot fracture, OU coach Bob Stoops announced Thursday afternoon. Thompson suffered the injury Thursday during OU's first practice of the season.

"Kendal will undergo a surgical procedure today," Stoops said. "He is eager to rejoin his teammates on the field as soon as possible."

Thompson had been involved in a three-man race for starting quarterback position for the Sooners. It is now down to junior Blake Bell and redshirt freshman Trevor Knight.

Bell has felt like the prohibitive favorite to earn the spot, but Stoops has not made any public comments about Bell being the guy.

With Thompson out for the rest of camp, it will give Knight and true freshman quarterback Cody Thomas a lot more repetitions. No exact timetable has been set for how long Thompson will be out.

"We're optimistic that Kendal will return early in the season," Stoops said.
