OU midterm grades: special teams

Concluding our look at OU halfway through the regular season. It's time to grade the special teams.

Oklahoma is 5-1 heading into the second half of the regular season, but how have the Sooners done so far? Grading OU in all three phases of the game.

Special teams

Tough to ask for more from kicker Michael Hunnicutt. He is 14-of-15 on field goals and has made all 18 of his extra points.

His long is 44 yards, but he has been one of the most consistent performers for the Sooners. Nick Hodgson has 28 touchbacks on his 38 kicks. Opponents' longest return is a mere 29 yards.

Grade: A

Punter was one of the bigger questions going into the season, but Jed Barnett has done a solid job in his first season.

He's averaging 42.5 yards per kick with 10 of his 31 kicks being placed inside the 20. After a stellar start, Barnett has dropped off a bit in the last couple of week, including allowing an 85-yard punt return for touchdown last week.

Grade: B-

OU has one of the most electrifying punt returners in the nation in Jalen Saunders, but he hasn't been able to get on track. He had a 45-yard return earlier this season, but he's only averaging 10.9 yards per return so far.

Roy Finch had a stellar 73-yard return against Texas, and Finch and Trey Franks are both averaging more than 30 yards per return.

Grade: B
