Garnett now a Sooner

In-home visit by Bob Stoops seals the deal for OU with defensive lineman Courtney Garnett.

The pieces all fell into place for Oklahoma and New Orleans St. Augustine defensive lineman Courtney Garnett. In the last month, things couldn't have gone better and Thursday it became official.

With OU coach Bob Stoops making an in-home visit, Garnett decided to end his recruitment and commit to the Sooners.

Garnett, a three-star prospect, has been on OU's radar since the spring. However, Garnett visited Texas first and committed to the Longhorns. OU defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery never quit checking back in, though, to see if there was still a chance.

Things fizzled out between Garnett and the Longhorns, and it became obvious OU was in the driver's seat. Things progressed even more toward the Sooners following an incredible official visit to Norman two weeks ago.

Other schools were there. Garnett was hoping to make trips to Oregon and/or Tennessee but things never materialized. It also got interesting Monday night when Notre Dame made an offer.

But once again timing turned out to be everything. Notre Dame never got a chance to make a visit and Stoops came in and closed the show before Garnett could take an expected official visit to South Bend this weekend. Garnett did confirm late Thursday night he was still going to take the official visit to Notre Dame with Stoops' blessing.

Stoops made a huge impression on Garnett's parents on the official visit, and his parents gave Garnett their blessing to commit to OU before they left Norman.

Garnett elected to wait at that point but didn't see the point in waiting any longer Thursday night. It also hasn't hurt OU's chances that his teammate, three-star offensive tackle Joseph Paul, pledged to the Sooners earlier this month, too.

With Garnett in the fold, the Sooners now have 23 commits for the Class of 2014 and should be done looking for defensive linemen even though it is clear OU commit Brandon Glenn will not be able to qualify academically.
