OU gets new 2016 opener

Sooners will travel to Houston to open the season in 2016

The Oklahoma Sooners will open the 2016 in a premier stadium, and it won’t be their own.

Oklahoma will face the University of Houston on Sept. 3, 2016 in the season opener at NRG Stadium the home of the Houston Texans.

Houston will return to Norman in the season opener in 2019.

“The greater Houston area has long been a stronghold of support for OU,” said OU vice president and director of athletics, Joe Castiglione, in a statement. “We are excited to showcase our program in one of the nation’s largest markets and an NFL venue that has hosted the Super Bowl.”

The Sooners were scheduled to play Louisiana-Monroe to open the season. That game will now be played on Sept. 10, 2016.

Oklahoma has never lost to Houston, posting a 2-0 record against the Cougars. Houston is the most recent addition to the Sooners’ nonconference schedule of major conference opponents during the next few season.

Oklahoma faces Tennessee this year and next, Ohio State in 2016 and 2017, UCLA in 2018 and 2019, Nebraska in 2021 and 2022 and Michigan in 2025 and 2026.
