OU at No. 18 in initial poll

OU now knows the work it has to do, coming in at No. 18 in the initial college football playoff poll.

Is Oklahoma out of the four-team college football playoff race? That’s debatable, but the Sooners now know what they’re up against.

OU comes in at No. 18 in the initial poll for the college football playoff, announced Tuesday evening. The Sooners are one of five Big 12 schools in the top 20.

The Sooners enter the weekend at 5-2 and are the highest-ranked two-loss team in the poll. LSU is No. 19, followed by West Virginia at No. 20. Of course, OU went to Morgantown last month and defeated the Mountaineers.

TCU, who defeated OU three weeks ago, is No. 1 in the Big 12 at No. 7, followed by Kansas State at No. 9 and Baylor at No. 13.

The Sooners will get a chance to improve their resume when the Bears come to Norman next weekend. As of now, the 12-member panel voted Mississippi State, Florida State, Auburn and Ole Miss as the top four teams in the nation.

OU is ranked No. 19 in the coaches poll and No. 20 in the AP poll.

The key selection criteria includes strength of schedule, head-to-head competition, conference champions, common opponents and key injuries. The top 25 is going to be released Tuesday evenings every week until the end of the season.
