Sooners spotlight: Darrin Kirkland

One of OU's top targets is ready to decide. Before he does, get to know more about Darrin Kirkland.

Oklahoma never lost contact with Indianapolis Lawrence Central middle linebacker Darrin Kirkland, and it has been paying off.

The Sooners were in his top schools in the spring before committing to Michigan. After his decommitment, OU is back and now in his final four. He is going to pick among OU, Texas, Ole Miss and Tennessee on Monday afternoon.

Kirkland, ranked No. 5 at middle linebacker, took an official visit to OU last month and is one of several top targets for OU at the position.

Scout says:

Very smart, instinctive player who always seems to be in good position and around the football. Takes good angles to the ball, rarely takes false steps and shows good closing ability. Has gotten stronger and thicker over the last year and needs to continue to do that.

Przybylo says:

Once everything started to unfold at Michigan, said to keep an eye on Kirkland. The signs were there that something could come together for the Sooners and the high four-star prospect.

It goes without saying how much OU needs linebackers in this class, but the stress is certainly at middle linebacker more than anywhere else. OU needs a legit middle linebacker instead of trying to convert somebody into that role.

No conversion needed with a beast like Kirkland. As of now, it feels like OU has a little ground to make up. But if he’s looking for immediate playing time, the Sooners should feel great about their chances with Kirkland.
