Sooners spotlight: Ryan Newsome

OU has made the final cut for wide receiver Ryan Newsome. Get to know him in a different way in this Scout Spotlight.

When he first started to pick up steam as a junior, it was clear the battle for Aledo (Texas) High wide receiver Ryan Newsome was going to be a big one, long one and a tough one.

Oklahoma has made the final cut for the 27th-ranked receiver in the nation, and OU has taken its best shot several times during the calendar year.

Newsome is set to choose between OU, Texas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, UCLA and TCU whenever he’s ready. All of his official visits are in the books.

Scout says:

Newsome is one of the premiere speed prospects in all of the country. He is also one of the top-rated slot wide receivers and deservedly so. he brings exactly what you want in this style of player. He can line up all over the field and gash defense with big plays and can score any time he gets his hands on the ball. A dangerous return man, which is an understatement, because he is the No. 1 guy in Texas High School Football in punt return TDs.

Przybylo says:

Newsome has been OU’s No. 1 priority at receiver for the class for a long time. He has developed a very spiritual bond with OU coaches Jay Norvell and Bob Stoops.

If it wasn’t for that unique bond, it would feel like the Sooners are already on the outside looking in. But Newsome has made it clear how much that deeper than football connection has meant to him.

OU needs some playmakers in the slot, which sounds funny to say considering all the talent that is in Norman right now. Newsome is a guy who could make an immediate impact, but it does feel he could also head to a redshirt season first before coming onto the scene.
