Campbell commits to Sooners

OU picked up yet another top defensive recruit commitment as Gabriel Campbell pledged to the Sooners late Tuesday night.

New Oklahoma co-defensive coordinator Jerry Montgomery preached patience to OU fans on Twitter last weekend.

He knew good times were coming for the Sooners. It happened Saturday when OU landed four-star defensive lineman Neville Gallimore from Canada Prep.

It continued late Tuesday night as Yazoo City (Miss.) High three-star defensive lineman Gabriel Campbell said he’s ready to be a Sooner, confirming to Sooners Illustrated he has committed to OU.

Campbell chose OU over schools such as Ole Miss and Mississippi State and marks the second consecutive year the Sooners have been able to go into Mississippi and land a top recruit. It was cornerback Tito Windham for the 2014 class.

Campbell was hoping to visit OU on a couple of occasions, but he didn’t have a qualifying ACT score to make the trip. Once he did, his bags were packed, and he was ready.

Campbell visited OU for Bedlam weekend. Despite the loss, Campbell was incredibly high on his time in Norman, and it felt like just a matter of time before he committed.

That time ran out Tuesday night. Campbell was considering taking a trip to Kentucky, but he said if he felt he was ready to make the call, he wouldn’t hesitate.

Campbell is OU’s 19th commitment of the 2015 class with the last four all being much-needed help on the defensive side of the ball.

He is OU’s fourth defensive lineman commit, joining Gallimore, Marquise Overton and Kenneth Mann. OU isn’t done on the defensive line, but adding Gallimore and Campbell in the last four days has certainly eased any worries about the position.

Campbell said he is around 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds now.
