Smith, Williams among top OU targets

The next five players in ranking order in the Scout 300 2.0 for 2016 for OU fans to watch.

The Class of 2016 is about to get rolling in a huge way for Oklahoma as the Sooners will have their first junior day Sunday.

OU enters this week with one commitment. And with the release of the Scout 300 2.0 for the 2016 class, Sooners Illustrated presents 25 realistic targets at this time.

This is not all of the Scout 300 prospects OU has offered, just the ones Sooners Illustrated feels comfortable in saying OU is a legit factor.

Here is part two of a five-part series.

Nacogdoches (Texas) S Brandon Jones (No. 39)

Jones first got recognized when OU was looking at 2015 cornerback Jaylon Lane. Ever since, OU has remained a constant presence in his recruitment. The Sooners keep making the cut for Jones as he starts breaking things down, but there’s nothing to suggest at this point that OU is the leader or the favorite when it’s all said and done.

Rialto (Calif.) Carter LB Lokeni Toailoa (No. 65)

Here’s the first instance of a package deal. For months, Toailoa and Caleb Kelly have talked about being a package deal. That rarely ever actually happens, but it would be all sorts of interesting if it did here. With OU in so good right now with Kelly, the Sooners would love to use that to their advantage with another quality linebacker like Toailoa.

Fort Worth (Texas) All Saints DL Mike Williams (No. 82)

One of OU’s most recent offers and one of those it’s about time offers. Williams now has more than 20 offers and most thought OU would be among them in July. It doesn’t feel like it will hurt in the end as Williams, like most defensive linemen in this list, has already built that bond with Jerry Montgomery. He is expected to visit for junior day March 7.

Euless (Texas) Trinity DL Chris Daniels (No. 87)

OU made this offer a while ago and it didn’t make a lot of waves. But as Daniels has gotten more evaluation, it’s become clear why the Sooners were so quick to jump in and get into the Daniels sweepstakes. The next step for OU will be to obviously get Daniels to campus, hopefully for one of its two junior days.

Baltimore St. Frances Academy DL Rahshaun Smith (No. 95)

Smith was targeted by OU nice and early and has a big relationship with mentor Cory Robinson, who has been instrumental in OU landing Charles Tapper and William Johnson. That connection alone won’t seal the deal for OU, but it’s a step in the right direction in what should be another long, drawn out recruitment for a top prospect.
