OU 15 questions for spring '15: No. 14

The questions for OU's spring continues, this time taking a look at punt returner.

Oklahoma spring football is just around the corner. Coming off a disappointing 2014 season, all Sooner fans are looking forward to turning the page to 2015.

Every edition of spring practices bring along questions, but there has arguably never been a more fascinating and uncertain spring than the one OU is about to begin.

Sooners Illustrated is here to help. During these next 15 days, we are going to pose one major question each day regarding OU’s 2015 spring football issues.

The countdown will end March 6, the final day before OU’s first day of practice and coincidentally, OU’s second junior day event and OU basketball’s showdown vs. Kansas in a huge day in OU sports. After spring practice, we will revisit these same 15 questions and see what has been answered and what remains left to be figured out.

Question No. 14: Has OU found a punt returner?

There seemed to be three choices heading into last season. And for whatever reason, none of them panned out at all.

The hold your breath moments with Jalen Saunders perhaps were just taken for granted because there wasn’t one of those in 2014.

Between Sterling Shepard, Michiah Quick and Zack Sanchez, the answers were simply not there. Quick wasn’t ready. Sanchez was more of a safety valve, and Shepard could never get going.

But the answer has been found with mid-year transfer Dede Westbrook. The four-star receiver is known just as much for his special teams ability as he is for his receiver prowess. And that is a great thing for OU as Westbrook is one heck of a receiver.

Westbrook spoke openly about wanting to be the guy during his recruitment, and there’s nothing to suggest he can’t become that guy for this season.

OU didn’t have any jaw-dropping errors in the punt return game, but it was rare when anything of significance happened outside of a fair catch.

Westbrook will bring that dynamic back. Jay Boulware will be entering his third year as OU’s special teams coach, and he should have a great idea now of what he has on campus. He knows he has to use Westbrook.
