OU 15 questions for spring '15: No. 3

No. 3 in the countdown asks a basic question, who is going to make that leap on offense for OU?

Oklahoma spring football is just around the corner. Coming off a disappointing 2014 season, all Sooner fans are looking forward to turning the page to 2015.

Every edition of spring practices bring along questions, but there has arguably never been a more fascinating and uncertain spring than the one OU is about to begin.

Sooners Illustrated is here to help. During these next 15 days, we are going to pose one major question each day regarding OU’s 2015 spring football issues.

The countdown will end March 6, the final day before OU’s first day of practice and coincidentally, OU’s second junior day event and OU basketball’s showdown vs. Kansas in a huge day in OU sports. After spring practice, we will revisit these same 15 questions and see what has been answered and what remains left to be figured out.

Question No. 3: Who is going to make the biggest offensive leap?

Wrote this question with one name in mind, and that’s Michiah Quick. He seemed to be too busy thinking for the better part of his freshman season. This should be the year OU lets him loose.

Quick doesn’t have the greatest hands in the world so the key for Lincoln Riley is going to be to find ways to get him the ball and get him out in space. Because once Quick is out in space, all bets are off as to what he’s going to do next, but it’s probably going to be something highlight worthy.

There has been a lot of talk of doing things the OU way under Jay Norvell. He preached it all the time. It was good for discipline, but it didn’t always necessarily bring about results.

In some cases, you could say it stunted development because you had guys doing things that didn’t come natural to them. Some guys would work so hard to become a better all-around receiver that it negated what made them so special in the first place.

So stop trying to make Quick something that he isn’t and isn’t ever going to be. Focus on what he does well, and exceptionally well in some cases, and let him make that impact everybody believes he can.

Riley has to know he has something special with Quick so it’s going to be incredibly intriguing to see what he comes up with to make sure Quick is used to the best of his abilities.

This is the year for Quick. Because if it isn’t, not sure when that year will be coming, if at all.
