OU's running back 'wish list'

OU only needs one running back for 2016 but that doesn't mean there isn't a strong list of candidates.

Things are starting to work themselves out on the recruiting trail. It’s time to start looking more intently on Oklahoma’s “wish list” for the Class of 2016.

Here is an idea of where OU stands in May, the first list of the cycle. The number in parentheses indicates the number of recruits OU is looking to sign at the position for the Class of 2016. The names do not necessarily reflect OU’s official board but are the best guesstimate of who OU is targeting.

Running back (1)

Committed: None.

Favorite: Beaumont (Texas) Central’s Devwah Whaley. There is no doubt OU is making Whaley the No. 1 priority. Quarterback commit Austin Kendall is recruiting him. OU coaches Cale Gundy, Jay Boulware and Lincoln Riley are recruiting him. Coming off a great visit to Norman in March, OU visited Whaley with one of its first trips during the spring evaluation period. Long battle ahead, but the Sooners are in it.

Next in line: Houston C.E. King’s Trayveon Williams. OU has some ground to make up if Williams is indeed going to be the guy. It sure feels like TCU and Texas A&M are the two schools to beat, but OU did make his top 10. The key will be to finally get him on campus. As much as he has wanted to get to Norman, he hasn’t done that just yet.

On the radar: Lone Grove (Okla.) High’s Jeremy Lewis. Those are the only two uncommitted offers at running back, but Lewis could be an answer down the road. His big offer is Nebraska, but he’s someone who should see his stock increase during this spring eval period. He has been a frequent visitor to OU and was at junior day and the spring game.
